Activity:

Vertical Surface Activities

Age range

The activities can be modified to suit 1-12 years

This activity helps to develop

  • Trunk/shoulder/arm/hand strength
  • body awareness
  • wrist positioning in preparation for handwriting
  • perceptual skills such as understanding up/down, top/bottom, right/left concepts

Materials

  • magnets on fridge or magnet board
  • Wikki Stix (waxed string)
  • Felt shapes and felt board
  • Chalk and chalk board
  • Art easel, paper and crayons/pencils/paint

Instructions

All of these materials can be done on a "vertical surface" such as an easel, magnet board or chalk board.

Wikki Stix are waxed pieces of string that can be manipulated into shapes and pictures and stuck onto glass, bricks, paper etc.

Provide regular opportunities for your child to engage in activities on a vertical surface as they have so many developmental benefits.
