Animal walks are great to help develop muscle strength and body awareness as they involve putting weight through the joints of the body, moving through space and feeling textures (such as carpet or dress-ups) against the skin. Animal walks can be a good "class-room break" activity too. Try asking your child or class group to pretend to walk like the following animals;
- Bear- walk on hands and feet
- Cat- walk on hands and knees. Include back arches and stretches
- Snake- wriggle on the floor
- Frog- squat down and jump into the air.
- Caterpillar- lie on front or back and "caterpillar" along the floor.
- Crab- squat down onto hands and feet. Then "scuttle"
Modifications: Include obstacle course for extra interest if you like.
Always supervise during activities and use non-toxic materials! |
